GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia’s Gretchen Walsh set her second American record on Day 3 of the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC). Virginia won all three swimming events for the second day in a row and sits atop the women’s leaderboard with 846.5 points, while NC State holds a steady lead on the men’s side with 812.5 points.
Virginia’s Ella Nelson kicked off Thursday night by earning the women’s 400-yard IM crown for the fourth year in a row, touching the wall at 4:03.80. NC State’s Grace Sheble finished in second (4:09.51), followed by Louisville’s Kim Herkle in third (4:09.89).
Walsh set another NCAA, American, US Open, ACC, ACC Championship and pool record with a 48.25 in the women’s 100-yard fly – the fastest time in women’s swimming history. This marks her fourth gold of the 2024 Championships and her 13th Championship title overall. Louisville’s Gabi Albiero finished in second (50.68), followed by NC State’s Abby Arens in third (50.72).
The Cavaliers’ Aimee Canny won her second gold medal of the 2024 Championships in the women’s 200-yard free with her 1:43.10 finish. Paige Hetrick recorded a second-place finish for Louisville with a 1:44.02 touch and UVA’s Maxine Parker took third with a 1:44.31 finish.
The NC State men claimed two podium finishes in the men’s 400-yard IM with Kyle Ponsler’s first-place 3:41.18 finish and Kenneth Lloyd’s third-place time of 3:44.07. Pitt’s Max Matteazzi came in second, touching the wall at 3:42.38.
Defending NCAA Champion Youssef Ramadan claimed first in the men’s 100-yard fly for Virginia Tech (44.06), followed by NC State’s Aidan Hayes and Lukas Miller in second (44.41) and third (44.62), respectively.
Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano tied the ACC, ACC Championship and pool record in the men’s 200-yard free at 1:31.16 – the exact same time as split in the men’s 800-yard free relay on Tuesday. Brendan Whitefield added another podium finish for the Hokies with a 1:32.50 finish, in front of NC State’s Daniel Diehl who took third in 1:32.72.
Pitt secured a 1-2 finish in the men’s 3-meter dive as Cameron Cash became the first champion from Pitt since Dominic Giordano in 2017 with 426.30 points. Dylan Reed scored a 417.00 to finish in second and Miami’s Mohamed Farouk scored a 91.20 on his final dive to claim third with 409.15 points.
