Ahead of the Feb. 16 4A State swim meet at BYU, the Tooele Buffaloes swim team is set to compete in the Feb. 3 4A Region 10 championship.

“Our team did really well during the regular season,” head coach Holly Tate said. “We only have 10 girls on our team and they have really held their own, our boys are [also] having a great season.”

After several first-places throughout the season, by individuals and the team as a whole, Tate believes that the improvement by the swimmers will bode well for the team during the region and subsequent state tournament.

“For the girls, I’m really excited to see how Ava Leonelli, Maddie Nicholson, Haven Saling and Isabelle Lay do,” Tate said. “Hopefully they will all qualify for state.”

Tate has similar expectations for her boys swimmers.

“Liam Seals, Bennett Delaney, Michael Smurthwaite and Gavin Miller should all qualify for state, in relays and individual events,” she said.

Being in the 4A classification this season means that the competition will be stiffer, but Tooele has proven to be a dedicated and talented group.

“We probably won’t win a region title this year, but I’m super excited to see what they can do,” Tate said. “Everybody has been working so hard and I’m so proud.”
