The Kensington Swimming Pool will undergo much-needed repair work next month.
The facility, based in Dapper Road, will be closed to the public from Monday 1 April.
Patricia van der Ross, Mayco member for community services and health, said the aim was to equip the facility for swimming competitions.
“The length of the pool currently is 33 metres,” she said. “The intention is for a wall to be erected inside the swimming pool basin to reduce the length to 25 metres. This is the standard requirement to be able to host swimming competitions.”
In addition, it will also create a safer space for younger patrons to be able to swim in the shallow end.
According to Van der Ross, the total budget for the project is R852 543.
She explained that construction will start soon.
“The administrative processes are almost concluded, and once the contractor has been issued with a purchase order upgrades can begin.”
Cheslyn Steenberg, Ward 56 councillor, said more than R500 000 ward allocation will be diverted to the project.
He believes the upgrades will be beneficial to the community.
“We want to equip the facility so that galas and events can be held there. It will be beneficial to the aquatics community.
“It is for parents who cannot afford to send their children to a swimming club, so now their children will be able to train in a well-equipped pool. We want to make sure it’s a state-of-the-art facility.”
