Cal Travels To The Farm For Annual Showdown Against Peninsula Rivals

BERKELEY – The No. 2 California men’s swimming and diving team travels to the South Bay for the final dual meet of 2024 when the Golden Bears take on No. 6 Stanford at the Avery Aquatic Center. Saturday’s meet will be streamed on the Stanford Live Stream.

LAST TIME IN THE POOL
Last time out, the Bears soundly defeated USC in Southern California 193-106. The Bears won 11 events, sweeping the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 free and 100 fly. Jack AlexyDestin Lasco and Dare Rose won multiple events with Alexy winning both the 50 and 100 free. Lasco swept the backstroke events and Rose took both the butterfly events. Other individual winners were Matthew Jensen in the 100 breaststroke and Gabriel Jett in the 200 free.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
The Bears maintained their No. 2 ranking in the latest CSCAA top 25. Cal is second with 326 points. The top spot was awarded to Arizona State with 350 points. Rounding out the top five are NC State (322), Florida (311) and Indiana (297). Saturday’s foe, Stanford, is ranked No. 6 with 283 points.  
 
TOP-10 TIMES
Heading into the final dual meet of the 2023-24 campaign Cal still has several swimmers with top-10 times nationally. In the 100 free Jack Alexy and Bjorn Seeliger rank fifth and sixth respectively with times of 41.40 and 41.41. Gabriel Jett is fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:31.78. Destin Lasco ranks in the top 10 in the 100 back (1st – 44.28), 200 back (2nd-1:38.34) and 200 IM (3rd-1:40.16). Dare Rose is fourth in the 200 fly (1:39.76) and 10th in the 100 fly (44.98).   
 
WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS
The Bears have been off since early February. The last time they competed Jack Alexy and Geoffrey Vavitsas swept the weekly Pac-12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week Awards. Alexy won all four events he competed in, helping the Golden Bears defeat host USC. In his two individual event wins in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, he edged out teammate Bjorn Seeliger with times of 19.30 and 41.94. Vavitsas placed second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dive against USC. His 1-meter score of 321.80 was a season-best mark and fifth-best score in the 1-meter drive in program history. The Toronto native later scored 317.40 on the 3-meter dive. Vavitsas’ honor marks the second weekly award for Cal divers, as Joshua Thai was named Pac-12 Diver of the Week on Jan. 23.
 
AGAINST THE CARDINAL
Saturday will mark the 126th competition between the Bears and Cardinal. In the all-time series, the Cardinal owns a 102-23 advantage. However, under Dave Durden the Bears are 9-7 against the Cardinal and have won nine of the last 11 matchups. The last time they competed against each other, Cal defeated Stanford 156-142 at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Feb. 17, 2023.
